Embroidery Designs Project - sweatshirt into cardigan

How to make a cardigan from a sweatshirt

When I did cardigans (it's been a while), I folded the shirt to find the middle. Mark that.

Cut a strip of fabric the length of the shirt, plus 1 inch for a 1/2 inch turn under on each end.

As for the width to cut this strip, decide how wide you want the finished edging to be. Let's say you want it 1 inch. Cut the strip 5 inches wide. Press under the 1/2 inch on each end and 1/4 inch down both long sides.  Mark the center of this strip.

Match the center of the strip with the center of the shirt. The right side of the strip should be on the inside (wrong side)  of the shirt. Sew 1/4 inch on each side of the center mark. Now cut down the center.

Press the strips with the seam toward the strip.  Press the folded edge over the seam line. Pin down the edging.  Top stitch in place.  With this width, you can add buttons and buttonholes if you wish.  If not, you can make your strip narrower.
