Embroidery Software feature - combining Designs

A useful feature of any embroidery software is combining two or more embroidery designs.  Taking two or more embroidery designs and making one is great fun and easy to do. It is a very inexpensive way to create new projects without having to buy or digitize new embroidery patterns.

And for even more inexpensive sewing fun, you may want to get a scene components collection, so that you will have the large selection of designs to choose from and can make many different combinations of designs that are designed and digitized to be used together.  Most of our scene components sets are themed sets and there are many possibilities of the different scenes that can be created.

For Thread Artist, our first big success into the world of embroidery was when Sandy's first scenes components collection was featured in Sew News magazine.  It was our Victorian Snow Village Collection and it is still available today, although Sandy wanted to retire it long ago.  It does come with a notice that it does have jump stitches and is not of the same quality as the designs that she digitizes today.  Because of the limitations of the software there was no way to really control the jump stitches and other aspects of digitizing that are available today even in most inexpensive software.  Sandy was even invited to Las Vegas to teach the teachers how to use their software at their convention.  Even though the software that she used then was very primitive and had almost none of the features of Embroidery Magic 2, it sold for about $1600.00.

Since the first Snow Village, Sandy has made another similar themed components set called "Village Wonderland" and many more design collections that can be easily combined into scenes or sewn as single patterns.  Some of these Collections have scenes already made that machines with larger sewing areas can sew out and have single designs that can be put together in other combinations. Other machines with smaller sewing areas can also sew out larger scenes with re-hooping.   Links are below for most of  our scene component collections.

Country Side Scenes    5 Spring Scenes    Mini Scene    Let it Snow     Winter Scenes     Home Sweet Home

Another great use for your embroidery software is combining designs or splitting designs, especially if you have a machine with a small sewing area and want to sew out larger designs than your hoop will allow.  See the link below for more on this use.

See Our >  232 Ensembles Series index  Sew large designs with small machines or sew larger motifs with any machine

Some of our combined designs are shown below as scenes - the possibly combinations are almost endless

So now your question may be "How do I use my embroidery software to combine designs" - Just follow the easy steps below.

These steps below for combining designs are for Embroidery Magic software, however the procedure for other brands of software would probably be similar.

Combining Embroidery Designs

  • Open the first design - in your embroidery software  (this method works in EM 2 and Fancy Works and may work in most other embroidery digitizing and customizing software)

  • All designs open in the center of the screen, so you will need to move this design to the side, to about the position that you will want it later, so when you open the next design, it won't be on top of this design. You can easily move it again later to the exact position that you want it in relation to the other design/s that you will use.

  • To Open another design > Go to Edit > Paste From > Now tell your computer which design that you want to open > Click > Open - when the design opens, it should be selected and you can just grab it and drag it to any location that you want without selecting this design.

  • You can now open more designs by repeating the above procedures -

  • Now position the designs exactly where you want them -

  • Next Center the entire designs combination and filter the short stitches.

  • Save the combined designs as a dst file -

  • Note - That the first color in the last design that you open will show up as #1 in the needle bar.

When you open the combined designs file (after saving it as a single file) the colors of the second design will be changed to show up in sequence after the first design - You can use the needle bar to change the colors to how you want them to sew out.
