If you only want to do lettering, you may want to consider getting the first version of Embroidery Magic. There are some differences in the lettering of EM1 and EM2. The major one is that you can set your own underlay and you can combine underlay types with EM2. You are also not limited to just a satin stitch for the columns of the lettering. While the lettering features are more advanced in EM2, the first version works well and the lettering styles (fonts) are much less expensive for EM 1. Both programs allow you to create three letter monograms with the middle letter being larger than the ones on either side, this can be done with most fonts. And both programs have add-on font packs that include specific fonts digitized for three-letter monograms such as the Diamond Monogram, Curly Monogram, and the French Monogram.
